<![CDATA[The dynamics of organic contaminants in oceans and their role as carriers of global environmental change.]]> Wed, 30 Mar 2011 04:30:00 +0200 CAC
The lecture aims to look at the issue of organic contaminants in the marine environment. It will cover the forms in which they are transported into the ocean, the sources of contaminants and the accumulation and effects of contaminants on marine organisms. By their very nature, persistent organic contaminants have the capacity to reach every area of the planet and they are already altering the composition of the biosphere, as well as being another carrier of global environmental change caused by human activity. Finally, the speaker will also explain the work that is currently being done as part of the Malaspina Expedition to explore the world’s oceans.]]>

<![CDATA[Astronomy at CAC cycle 2010/2011: Venus, a strange yet familiar planet. Space exploration of Venus by the European 'Venus Express' probe.]]> Fri, 04 Mar 2011 01:41:00 +0100 CAC
Venus is an extreme planet. With a temperature of 480 degrees centigrade on its surface because of the greenhouse effect of its atmosphere, and with gross pressure of 90 atmospheres, it is the perfect example of an uninhabitable place.

However, in spite of its inhospitable character, Venus displays a large number of interesting phenomena that we are only now beginning to understand thanks to the discoveries made by the Venus-Express mission.

We will have the honour of receiving one of the principal researchers of this successful mission, Pierre Drossart, who will give us a firsthand account of some of the key points, as well as the results that are being obtained, thanks to the currently active research projects.

Ask a scientist. Palaeontology: a window to the past.

I am sure that many of your students have enjoyed themselves watching the Jurassic Park films, but is it possible to clone a dinosaur?

We have invited Carles Lalueza-Fox, a scientist and expert in these matters, who will provide them with answer to these and many other questions that may be put forward.
